P4X266 – VIA is doing something

According to official VIA channels, it is reported that some major distributors in the US and China have decided to sell motherboards based on the P4X266 chipset, despite legal threats from Intel.

VIA’s marketing department even named some of these companies: Ingram Micro Inc., Eprom Inc., Leadman Electronics Inc., Leadertech Systems of Chicago Inc., Eastern Data, Inc., Agaman and Daiwa in the USA; several major distributors in Europe remained unnamed.

They will sell “untagged” boards (boards supplied by the new VIA division) on the VIA P4X266, making it harder for Intel to harass VIA in courts around the world. In addition, 5 to 10 distributors in mainland China have agreed to distribute the boards for the P4X266 in the same way. VIA did not name these Chinese distributors.

Company officials agree that the latest developments are VIA’s big progress in promoting the P4X266. The company is so optimistic that it plans to sell more than a million chipsets each in November and December.

Last but not least, informed sources report that VIA CEO Chen Wen-chi met with Intel executives at Comdex and spoke with them about the P4 license after months of litigation. They say that Intel can even show mercy and for each chipset sold it will charge $ 2 from VIA, which is almost half what SiS or ALi should pay. The reason for this remains unclear. Truth and this information so far looks more like guesswork and fiction than the truth.

It goes without saying that neither Intel nor VIA have commented on the information about the agreement in any way. Analysts say Intel may license VIA due to… the fact that SiS share in the P4 chipset market could threaten Intel’s leadership. Quite an interesting point of view…

In any case, everything will be refuted or confirmed over the next few weeks.
