About kings, cabbage and PR-rating…
Not a day goes by without a publication, pointing to sources inside AMD, promises an imminent release of the processor, which so far everyone calls the desktop version on the Palomino core.
It became known that the new 1.5 GHz (or 1.533 GHz) processor will have the XP prefix in addition to the traditional Athlon name. Immediately there is a desire to draw an analogy with the notorious operating system, but XP, as interpreted by AMD, should not mean Experience, but Extra Performance. As expected, the new processor will be compatible with many existing Socket A motherboards, saving everyone money.
In addition, along with Athlon XP, a new version of the server processor – Athlon MP with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz should be released. However, this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
Well, and the most scandalous message that AMD has left to confirm or deny is a new PR-rating that AMD is going to introduce in order to try to compare, if not in frequency, then at least in name, its processors with Pentium 4. The new 1.6 GHz processor may be called the Athlon XP 1900+, indicating that its performance will be roughly on par with the Pentium 4 1.9 GHz. The new rating should mean an approximate frequency parity with the Pentium 4.
To be honest, I’m not sure if this decision is correct. It looks too old and shameful. Here are the ratings AMD is going to introduce for its new and existing processors: 1333 will become 1500+, 1400 – 1600+, 1467 – 1700+, 1500 – 1800+, 1600 – 1900+.
Well, let’s see what all this will turn out to be…
