There has been no news for a long time about the application of superconductivity in modern technology. And now, the other day, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced the development of the S-Cam – a new type of CCD matrix with a superconducting sensitive array of elements for transatmospheric telescopes.
As you know, CCDs used in modern space-based telescopes, such as, for example, the Hubble Telescope, no longer provide the required sensitivity. According to Nicola Rando, one of the developers of the S-Cam, the sensitivity of the new camera is sufficient to detect individual photons. This is achieved through the use of a thin superconducting tantalum electrode. When a photon decays, a charge is released, proportional to the photon energy; by the magnitude of the charge energy, one can determine its “color” (m.e. radiation wavelength).
To maintain superconductivity, the 36-layer S-Cam matrix is cooled using the helium-3 isotope to 0.3K – a temperature “cooler” than the space vacuum itself.
S-Cam can detect photons ranging from infrared to gamma rays with energies up to 10 keV. Other CCD matrices are not capable of detecting single photons, and in order to recreate the path of the trajectories, it is necessary to combine the results of several observations and then, through special calculations, determine the photon energy, and, therefore, the radiation wavelength. S-Cam greatly simplifies the process, which will lead to a reduction in the time to recreate the trajectories of photons.
