Toshiba: RDRAM for PC will no longer be

In addition to yesterday’s news that Toshiba will sell its Virginia-based DRAM manufacturing facility to Micron, there is some additional information.

The fact that Toshiba is dismantling equipment for the production of flash memory in Virginia and will release it only in Japan sounded yesterday. As it turned out, the flash will now be produced by the joint venture Toshiba – Sandisk, about which the corresponding press releases of the companies appeared today.

Much more interesting is another statement: Toshiba announced its decision to stop selling RDRAM memory for the PC market. No, the production of RDRAM will not stop: as you know, Toshiba is one of the suppliers of this memory for Sony Playstation 2 game consoles. Nevertheless, “within the framework of the new strategy,” according to company representatives, the release of RDRAM for the needs of Sony – about 150 thousand. modules per quarter – for now, the matter will be limited. As it became known, Rambus has so far declined to comment on such a sad fact for her, and what is there to comment on – you will not be violently cute…

No matter how this “new strategy” is called, it is obvious that Toshiba is leaving all unstable sectors of the memory market with all its might, occupying only those niches where there is a prospect (for example, flash memory) and those where sales are guaranteed unconditionally (for example , long-term contractual relationship with Sony). Is it far-sighted to give up our own DRAM production capacities? Wouldn’t it have been better to join some transnational DRAM association, for example, with the same Infineon?? Time will tell. In any case, Toshiba will no longer incur significant losses due to the release of memory products that are still unprofitable. Source: Silicon Strategies
