Intel vs VIA: four new lawsuits

Intel has decided to continue the patent and legal battle against VIA and announced today that it has filed four new patent lawsuits in three countries – Germany, England and Hong Kong.

A lawsuit filed by Intel in Germany claims that VIA, by releasing the P4X266 chipset, violated European patent EP 0 694 849 and German patent DE 195 80 990. VIA itself and its German branch Via Technologies GmbH are named as defendants in this claim.

Intel’s UK lawsuit accuses P4X266 of VIA of violating UK patent 2,287,162B and European patent 694,849 B1. In the second English lawsuit, Intel accuses VIA of violating three British patents at once – 2,230,118, 2,261,753 and 2,364,494. In the first lawsuit, VIA and Elitegroup Computer Systems were named as defendants, in the second – VIA Technologies Europe Ltd. and Realtime Distribution Ltd.

Finally, a Hong Kong lawsuit accuses VIA, which issued C3, of infringing three Hong Kong Intel patents – 931073, 1006754 and 1016711. VIA Technologies Inc are named as defendants. and Trend Electronics (HK) Ltd.

It looks like Intel is getting into the taste and intends to turn the current standoff into a protracted trial.
