256 Mbit SDRAM chips take the lead

With no end in sight to DRAM price cuts, leading memory manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor are increasing the share of 256 Mbit SDRAM chips that can still make money. It looks like in the next year or two, 256-megabit SDRAM chips will become the main product in the memory market.

In 2000, according to statistics, 256 Mbit SDRAM chips had 3-4% of the DRAM memory market. Currently, the share of these chips in the total supply has exceeded 10%, and demand will only increase – just remember the minimum “wishes” for the amount of installed memory for systems running the new Windows XP operating system. By the end of 2021, analysts predict, 256 Mbit chips will be displaced from the pedestal of the “mainstream product” 128 Mbit chips.

Samsung, for example, increased its share of 256 Mbit SDRAM chips in total volume to 17% from 10% at the end of 2000. Despite the current financial difficulties, Hynix Semiconductor (ex. Hyundai Electronics Industries), also intends to increase the production of 256 Mbit SDRAM chips to 20% of the currently available 5-7% of the total production. Elpida also has high hopes for the 256 Mbit SDRAM and plans to significantly increase the production of these chips in 2021, when additional production capacity will be launched. According to Infineon representatives, the company no longer intends to increase the volume of production of 128 Mbit SDRAM chips, focusing on the production of 256 Mbit chips; moreover, it is planned to repurpose all lines occupied by the production of 64 Mbit chips for the production of 256 Mbit SDRAM.
