ICIS-LOR, TICE, DRAM: some statistics
According to many Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese memory manufacturers, the majority of stocks of chips in warehouses are less than a month’s volume, despite the fact that prices persistently continue to slide down.
According to the ICIS-LOR marketing company, the weighted average wholesale prices for 128 MB SDRAM chips (PC133, 16M x 8) for the 30-day period from July 19 to August 17 amounted to $ 2.17 in North America, $ 2.30 in Europe and the same in Asia. Compared to the previous 30-day period (until August 10), prices are down 4.78% in North America, 2.69% in Europe and 2.88% in Asia.
Spot prices for 128MB SDRAM DIMMs (PC133) dropped 3.38% to $ 13.91 in North America, 0.88% to $ 14.06 in Europe and 1.57% to $ 12.83 in Asia.
According to data received today from the Taiwan Semiconductor Exchange (TICE), the spot prices for 512 MB SDRAM memory modules (PC133) dropped by as much as one and a half dollars to $ 48.25 compared to last Friday (August 31), prices for 256 MB SDRAM memory modules (PC133) decreased by $ 0.85 to $ 22.15, prices for 128 MB SDRAM modules (PC133) decreased on average by $ 0.60 – $ 0.75 to $ 11.50. Chip prices remained at about the previous level.
As noted by many analysts, the decrease in stocks of memory products in Asia is the result of the shutdown of several production lines by Japanese enterprises. In the meantime, work continues in Taiwan, and there is no talk of any production stoppages. The fact is that Taiwanese manufacturers have their own well-functioning channels for selling memory products, and non-stop trade will continue, according to observers, as long as the manufacturers themselves can tolerate such low prices. Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Infineon are doing roughly the same with sales.
Memory reserves in Europe and the USA are still quite significant. As soon as stocks begin to decline, a sharp spike in prices upward is not ruled out.
It is noteworthy in this respect that there is an interesting message: in Europe, prices for RIMM memory modules RDRAM have started to rise somewhat. The main reason for the rise in prices is the decision of Samsung to somewhat reduce the supply of this type of memory to the market. Another reason, of course, is the increased demand for Pentium 4 systems: both new models have been announced, and the season seems to be ripe. However, very little is left before the official announcement of the i845, and analysts believe that many corporate users will prefer the less powerful, but cheaper Pentium 4 systems with SDRAM.
