Fuji: 3GB floppy disk in 3.5-inch form factor
Fujifilm announced a new development – technology Nano3 (Nano Cubic), which allows to obtain a thin-film (several microns thick) dispersed layer of magnetic microparticles, which will allow, for example, to produce floppy disks of a standard 3.5-inch form factor with a capacity of 3 GB or more.
Nano3 (Nano Cubic) is a development of the ATOMM (advanced super thin layer and high output metal media) technology patented by Fujifilm in 1992, which is now used in the well-known Zip100 (100 MB) and Zip250 (250 MB) magnetic disks, and also in tape cartridges DLTtype (40 GB).
The improvements applied in Nano3 (Nano Cubic) are not only about reducing the thickness of the coating compared to ATOMM; to create a reliable coating Fujifilm will use a mixture of two magnetic materials: an alloy of a ferromagnet with an acicular structure of particles with a diameter of the order of 10 nm – 30 nm and “disc-shaped” particles of barium ferrite. In addition, it was not without the development of a special bonding high molecular weight material (glue), which makes it possible to “lay” 10 nm -30 nm particles into a homogeneous mass.
