New RISC processor for smart cards

Samsung Electronics begins mass production of a new 16-bit RISC microprocessor for use in smart cards. Samsung’s line of chips for use in smart cards looks complete with the release of 16-bit ClamRISC – 8- and 32-bit processors are already there.

ClamRISC can handle 32 or 64KB EEPROM, 128KB regular ROM, programmable photomasks and supports up to 4KB RAM. The chip has built-in hardware support for Data Encryption Standard (DES), which is much faster than software. In addition, the processor can be equipped with an embedded OS and supports Java and Multos platforms.
