Pluto Rises over McKinley

In an interview with ZDNet UK on Tuesday in Dublin, Hewllet-Packard Itanium Program Manager Marc Botherel said that MacKinley processors will provide roughly double the performance gains (compared to the first Itanium) and a tangible reduction in the price of their base. The performance gain will be achieved due to the architecture of the processor itself – McKinley uses a 128-bit data bus and an integrated cache, in contrast to the 64-bit bus and external cache in the first Itanium.

HP’s main contribution to the Itanium collaboration is Pluto, a chipset that supports both Itanium and HP’s PA-RISC processors. According to Mark Boterel, Pluto is quite cheap to manufacture and suitable for both servers and workstations, which will allow unifying components and increasing the number of products. It should also be noted that Pluto is the first 64-bit chipset to support the AGP bus, which gives it good prospects in the high-performance workstation market.

All of these innovations should help the Itanium family win its rightful place in the sun. The first solutions based on Merced were met with caution, so far only about 70 thousand have been sold. systems, and Dell even stopped selling its Itanium-based workstations over the Internet. Another problem with the early Itanium processors was the lack of software optimized for the IA-64 architecture, however, according to Thomas Ullrich, head of Unix systems at HP, McKinley will ship with the complete software required to run.

The price reduction will also be achieved by reducing the size of the components. The first rack servers from HP were 7U high, while the McKinley systems the company is going to fit into a 2U form factor.Source: ZD Net
