Ericsson licenses Dai Nippon Printing Bluetooth core

Yesterday in Tokyo, Ericsson and Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) agreed on a licensing agreement under which Ericsson will provide some intellectual property for Bluetooth controllers and interfaces. DNP, which has an ASIC as a side business, will be the first company to license its Bluetooth expertise from Ericsson.

DNP will embed Bluetooth cores into its broadband interface processors as well as other ASICs. This is a rather promising business, since now the price is the main source of criticism in Bluetooth. The license agreement, however, did not apply to RF ICs (read: transceivers).

Ericsson is considering licensing its intellectual property to other ASIC companies. Previously, the company followed a slightly different policy, licensing Bluetooth only to companies with manufacturing facilities, from which it would then be possible to collect royalties from each product sold.
