MP3 vs MP3Pro vs Vorbis vs WMA: listen to the pros
An interesting experiment was carried out by the staff of The Washington Post: seven different “listeners” were invited to comparatively test the formats of digital audio compression: two members of the National Symphony Orchestra, one seller of high-end audio equipment, an audio recording studio producer, a composer and two guitarists – pretty expert composer!
The audience was invited to listen to two musical fragments “digitized” in different ways: the introductory part of “The Rite of Spring” by Stravinsky (1913., Stravinsky, “The Rite of Spring”) and “Love Ain?t for Keeping “by the notorious band Who.
The test session was carried out in normal home conditions using ordinary home equipment. Particular attention was paid to MP3Pro and Ogg Vorbis, the two newer and less researched formats compared to Windows Media Audio and MP3.
So, the results: two out of seven experts could not find any difference between the MP3Pro and Vorbis at all, the other five found Vorbis sounding at least realistic, but gave a higher rating to MP3Pro, and the highest – Windows Media Audio. However, everyone agreed that none of these formats can match the quality of CD Audio.
Most experts also found that the sound of compositions encoded by the beta version of Vorbis was significantly less representative of natural sounds: a human voice and individual musical instruments, although several experts, on the contrary, said that some instruments sounded more artificial in MP3Pro. However, almost everyone agreed that sudden changes in volume level more naturally reflect Vorbis than MP3Pro. Compared to regular MP3, experts said, Vorbis often more accurately reproduced the sound of wind instruments and percussion instruments, while MP3 conveyed a human voice better. MP3Pro earned a better rating than MP3 in all respects, primarily for clearer bass transmission and more sonorous treble sound. Windows Media Audio also got it: experts said that despite the best of all the presented formats, its sound was “washed out” and the sound was “thinned out” in places. All formats, according to experts, could not properly convey, “accommodate” the sound of “The Rite of Spring” by Stravinsky. “It sounded as if all the musicians had gathered at one point, sat in the same chair.”. Mainly, this remark was made in the address of the Vorbis format.
It is very difficult to draw unambiguous conclusions from such testing, however, there is some information for thought. However, judging by the divergent opinions of such authoritative experts, it seems that the assessment of the sound of various digital audio formats is still a specific and purely personal matter. By the way, in the materials of the article, unfortunately, there is no data whether the testing was carried out “blindly”.
