12-inch DRAM era is delayed
Almost all leading DRAM manufacturers have already announced delays in the commissioning of their 12-inch silicon wafer factories. It seems that there has been a purely practical revision of priorities for 2021: first of all, the transition from 0.18 micron process standards to 0.15 micron, and only then – the introduction of 12-inch factories and, accordingly, 0.13 micron technological process.
Here’s a selection of facts:
- Taiwanese Mosel Vitelic: construction of 300 mm factories in Taiwan and Canada has been suspended, their launch has been postponed to 2021;
- ProMOS Technologies (a joint project of Mosel Vitelic and Infineon Technology) – the launch of the 300 mm factory postponed from December 2021 to early 2021. The factory will manufacture 128- and 256-megabit DRAM chips, initially using 0.14-micron process technology;
- Winbond Electronics, Nanya Technology and Powerchip Semiconductor (PSC) will delay the commissioning of their 12-inch manufacturing facilities until the end of 2021;
- Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor also postponed the launch of 12-inch wafers to the second half of 2021.
What’s surprising here: with the current prices for DRAM and, accordingly, with scanty profits from product sales, they are generally surprised by their optimism even about the postponed dates…
