Gateway ditches AMD processors
Another unpleasant news for AMD: Gateway announced its decision to discontinue production of PCs based on AMD processors. All AMD Athlon-based product lines will be discontinued in the next two months, Gateway said. This is done as part of the company’s restructuring in order to reduce the number of suppliers and minimize overhead costs. The new series of products from Gateway – 300, 500 and 700, will use Intel Pentium 4 processors and Windows XP operating system.
AMD representatives commented on the Gateway decision in the sense that, despite today’s announcement, relations between the companies remain good and AMD is always ready to return to cooperation with Gateway.
It should be noted that analysts assessed the rejection of AMD’s Gateway processors as a stronger blow to the latter than the recent similar announcement by IBM, since Gateway was a more active manufacturer of PCs based on Athlon processors.
So far, the main blow to AMD has come from the US corporate market. The positions of the company in the markets of Europe and Japan, according to analysts, are quite confident and stable.
