Maybe the news is from a series of curiosities, maybe from a series of interesting engineering finds, but it was simply impossible to ignore such a message: at the Microprocessor Forum, TRANSTIVE TECHNOLOGIES showed its Dynamite software platform, capable of translating the binary code of one processor into the code of another, which was demonstrated at forum when PowerPC processor code was running on the processor …Athlon.

At the presentation, company representatives said that the essence of the process lies precisely in the dynamic “on the fly” transformation of the code of one architecture into the code of another. The presented system on the Athlon processor, for example, as it is known, supports the x86 instruction system, coped well with the Linux OS for PowerPC.

The idea itself, in fact, is not new: even the engineers of the esteemed DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation, now practically Compaq) were engaged in launching, in particular, the Windows NT system on the Alpha platform, moreover, the “native” x86 applications were successfully executed on it. However, emulating one system to another is not a very successful path, because, of course, in this mode, there is no need to talk about tolerable performance, at least slightly comparable to the work of a processor appropriate for a given platform.

Dynamite, according to company representatives, is actually a “decoder” of commands at the input, a core encoder and a translator to another code at the output. Something similar is the Code Morphing Software (CMS) software written by Transmeta for its Crusoe processor, however, it is just about converting the x86 instruction set into internal VLIW words.

The interest in developments of this kind is not accidental: if an x86 processor can act as a PowerPC, then why, for example, a MIPS processor cannot act as a StrongArm?

A word about performance: the company, in order not to be unfounded, gave the following diagram:

Here, as you can see, compares the performance of an extrapolated 1.0 GHz PowerPC processor, deduced from data from a real 450 MHz PowerPC, and a 1.4 GHz Athlon system running Dynamite. What is called, not bad for a start. And if such software is sewn into ROM? In a word, with a certain approach to the questions posed, the company may well reap dividends from its developments, as well as bring a fresh spirit to many of the current processor developments.
