VIA vs Intel: Athlon chipset case is finally closed
With today’s press release, VIA Technologies announced the complete victory and closure of the patent proceedings initiated in July 2000 by Intel.
Intel announced the final withdrawal of requirements for VIA regarding the infringement of its patents, which allegedly took place when VIA released chipsets for AMD’s K7 processors. VIA also announced the withdrawal of counterclaims. As a result, VIA will not pay Intel any royalties for the production of these chipsets.
VIA celebrates victory, however, major legal battles between the companies are yet to come. As you know, Intel and VIA have filed a lot of counterclaims in several countries over VIA’s rights to manufacture chipsets for Pentium 4 systems. So far, no one can predict the outcome of this trial.
