DDR chipset prices fell below $ 20

Following the price drop for DDR SDRAM, Taiwanese manufacturers – VIA Technologies, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and Acer Laboratories (ALi) – have begun to slash prices for their DDR chipsets. Moreover, the price decline is happening much faster than previously predicted, most likely due to Intel’s close presentation of its i845 with DDR support for Pentium 4.

The SiS 635T chipset for Socket 370 is currently supplied in bulk quantities for $ 19, the cost of VIA Pro266 has also been reduced to this mark. However, the companies’ approach is somewhat different: while SiS simply dropped the price, VIA uses a strategy of all kinds of discounts. Ali’s Aladdin Pro IV chipset price is also close to a similar mark (recall: the initial prices for these chipsets were about $ 30).

Chipset makers regret to note that the market share of DDR chipsets is currently significantly lower than expected. Mainly, these expectations were associated with a decrease in prices for DDR SDRAM to the level of SDRAM PC133 and, accordingly, an increase in demand for corresponding chipsets, which, alas, was not confirmed. Another important factor is the approaching third quarter, in which the i845 will grab its market share for Pentium 4 with PC133 SDRAM support. According to a roadmap from Intel, the company does not intend to release a DDR version of the chipset to the market until early next year, however, leading motherboard manufacturers – Asustek and Gigabyte Technology, have already received samples of the 845 chipset with DDR support . SiS representatives spoke directly in the sense that the presentation of a new DDR chipset from Intel at a much earlier date is simply inevitable. This is why Taiwanese chipset makers are in a hurry to grab as much market share as possible, literally “at any cost.”.
