Transmeta: new Crusoe TM5800 coming in February

According to a statement by Transmeta CTO David Ditzel, TSMC is currently finalizing preparations for a 0.13 micron Crusoe TM5800 processor. In massive quantities, the new chip is expected in February 2021. TSMC and Transmeta are also preparing for the TM6000, the first Crusoe processor with integrated graphics. According to Transmeta, the mass production of this chip is still scheduled for 2021.

Despite the huge losses of the company in the fourth quarter (expected sales volume of only about $ 1 million., mainly due to the delay in the release of the TM5800), Transmeta hopes to return to profitability in the first quarter of 2021 and compete in the market for low-cost mobile processors with its main rival Intel.

The TM5800 was announced back in June, however, for various reasons (due to delays in the presentation of the final version of the technical documentation for the TM5800, due to delays in the introduction of the 0.13 micron technical process – here each company issues its own versions) the release was postponed twice already. The last release date of the TM5800, called Transmeta a month ago, was December, and now, the new dates. Of course, there is not much left until February, the appearance of new processors made using 0.13 micron technical process could straighten Transmeta’s financial affairs at least next year.

By the way, the current situation with the TM5800 release delays makes one wonder whether Transmeta hastened to completely abandon IBM services in November 2000 (it was she who previously released Crusoe processors)? You see, now the situation would look different…
