Winchesters: Western Digital ??original??
Everyone is already accustomed to the fact that increasing the capacity of one platter in hard drives, starting with ten-gigabyte models, is in increments of exactly 10 GB – 10 gigabytes per platter, 20, 30, 40… The Western Digtal drives – Caviar WD400BB, WD600BB and WD800BB – became a completely unexpected departure from this trend. Judging by the number of platters and heads (for example, WD400BB – 2 and 3, respectively), their plate capacity is clearly higher than 20 GB, but also lower than 30 GB.
After referring to primary sources, t.e., to the documentation posted on the manufacturer’s website, it turned out that in fact everything is very simple: indeed, the capacity of the plates in these models is 27 GB! Moreover, the line as a whole is also a little “strange” – in the lower models WD200 – 300BB, 20 GB platters are still used, but already in the WD400 – 800BB – new ones, with a capacity of 27 GB.
In principle, it is hardly worth drawing any conclusions from all of the above (and what they can, interestingly, be?). Rather, this information is interesting simply as a funny fact – so, they say, this happens. It is unlikely that the “shortage of three gigabytes” will somehow significantly affect the speed results of new Western Digital hard drives when they are compared with hard drives from other manufacturers with “honest” 30 GB platters.
