Two messages about 64-bit processors from Intel

As it became known, Compaq Computer, which at one time postponed the release of servers based on Itanium processors due to problems with passing standard tests (see. our news from November 15), announced the start of their production.

Unfortunately, it is not yet clear exactly what caused the problem that caused Compaq to delay the release of its Itanium ProLiant 590/64 systems for five weeks. Initially, Compaq announced that the problems were in the chip itself, however, two weeks later, Intel representatives made adjustments: it turns out that the problems were in the BIOS supplied with the processor, and now its updated version has been released. A Compaq spokesman said on Wednesday: “The problem was with the Itanium processor, which was corrected by a microcode update. This is by no means a Compaq BIOS issue. “. However, Intel representatives rejected these fabrications, citing their inconsistency by the fact that “microcode is support for 32-bit legacy integrated into the processor… and does not in any way affect the operation of the processor in 64-bit mode “.

In a word, be that as it may, but the problem is over, and customers will soon begin to receive ProLiant 590/64 systems.

The second news concerns the release of a new generation of 64-bit processors – McKinley. As you know, the processors will work with the i870 chipset and will be announced at the very beginning of January, however, they will actually appear only in the second quarter of 2021.

According to The Inquirer, Intel will release 1 GHz version of McKinley with 3 MB cache for $ 4220, 1 GHz version with 1.5 MB cache for $ 2240 and 900 MHz version with 1.5 MB cache for $ 1330.

For comparison: the current Intel Itanium with a clock speed of 800 MHz and 4 MB of cache is selling for $ 4227.
