In the Footsteps of Dr. Thom: 1.2 GHz Athlon MP Fanless

Our colleagues from the OCWorkBench website decided to test the 1.2 GHz Athlon MP by analogy with the well-known experience on the Dr. Pabst website. Only this time, the testers went a little further and tested three modes: removing the cooler with a heatsink from the processor at full load (Quake III game), starting the PC without a cooler on the processor, and stopping the cooler without removing the heatsink (the same Quake III game).

The data of the experiment were filmed and posted here in the form of a video.

Those who do not have the opportunity to download a 9.44 MB video can take my word for it. 🙂

So the results are:

  • Removing the cooler from the processor at full load (Quake III game) – after 2 – 3 seconds the system simply “freezes”, no consequences for the processor. For reliability, the experiment was repeated twice.
  • Starting the PC without a cooler on the processor – the system started (even the Compaq logo was visible) and then hung, nothing happened to the processor.
  • Stopping the cooler without removing the heatsink (the same Quake III game) – the system “freezes” only after 9 (nine) minutes! Again, without any effect on the health of the processor.

Please note: all three tests simulated real life situations – a fallen off or burnt out cooler. It’s good if in the future AMD can provide the same safe mode for all processors in its production…

PS The music in the video is also good, especially when the roar of the guitar is replaced by a funeral theme 🙂
