February IDF Spring 2021: new Xeons, chipsets and Hyper-Threading

As you know, this year’s first Intel Developer Forum (IDF) will be held on February 25 – 28. Intel, according to some reports, intends to present two new Xeon processors at the forum. One of them is 0.13 micron Pentium 4 (Prestonia) for dual-processor server systems, the second is 0.18 micron Foster MP with 512 KB L3 cache and 1 MB. Both new items will support Hyper-Threading technology.

Refined Intel Workstation Processor Roadmap:

New Xeon Prestonia server processors will be clocked at 2.2 GHz and higher. Despite the fact that the announcement of P4 Northwood processors with 533 MHz FSB is expected in the second quarter, Prestonia chips with support for such a bus will appear only towards the end of the year. Accordingly, until the end of the year there will be no need to support such a bus in chipsets for server systems.

Foster MPs will only arrive at 1.4GHz, 1.5GHz, and 1.6GHz clocks, while 2GHz will only reach the 0.13μm process standard in Q4 when the Xeon MP processors begin shipping. Gallatin. 1.6GHz version of Foster MP will have 1MB L3 cache, 1.4GHz and 1.5GHz versions – 512KB L3 cache each. Gallatin is expected to have double the L3 cache at 1MB / 2MB.

Refined Intel processors roadmap for server systems:

So far there is no data on the Intel chipset for the Foster MP / Gallatin platform, it is expected that GC-HE from ServerWorks will be used: up to four slots for DDR200 memory (32 GB, expandable up to 64 GB).

For Prestonia server chips, Intel has developed the E7500 Plumas chipset: dual-channel DDR interface, up to eight DIMMs (up to 16 GB of memory). Along with this, ServerWorks developed the GC-LE chipset for such systems, however, the developers are still more configured to use Plumas. A single-channel version of the chipset is also expected – Plumas LE, for less expensive systems.

Initially, Plumas will appear with support only for the 400 MHz bus, but in the second half of the year, a version with support for 533 MHz FSB is expected – Plumas 533, which will support DDR266.

For workstations based on Prestonia processors: the current Intel 860 will be gradually replaced by the forthcoming Placer chipset supporting DDR200 / 266 (up to six DIMMs. up to 8 GB) and FSB 533 MHz. The main difference between the Placer and Plumas chipsets is the presence of the first support for the AGP 8x interface and the lack of it in Plumas.
