Mobile phone – a means for determining the name of the song?

As it turns out, the problem of recognizing a song that is playing on the radio is becoming more and more urgent. Researchers in the Philips laboratory want to create devices so that everyone can use their mobile phone to determine the name of the song they hear. And it should look like this: if you want to find out the name of the song, simply bring your mobile phone (having previously called a special number) to the column in a few seconds on the screen of your mobile you can see the name of the song.

The system being developed by Philips should analyze the music and send a text message to the phone. In addition, if you have m-commerce, you can immediately buy a CD of the artist whose song you just heard.

And how does this miracle work? Naturally, keeping a whole song in memory and then comparing it with what you heard is rather cumbersome and problematic. Besides, you can’t avoid mistakes. Researchers from Philips propose to proceed as follows – divide the composition into 33 frequency intervals and measure the energy spectrum of the signal in each interval, creating a 33-bit unique composition code. The likelihood of identifying a composition in this way should increase so much that, according to Philips, each composition can be identified in just 3 seconds.

Philips wants to create a database of about 100 thousand. compositions so that such a system can actually function.

This idea, in principle, is not new – this year the inventor from Essex, Bill Poel (Bill Poel) filed a patent for a device that could add inaudible digital codes to a composition on a CD, taken from information about a track on the CD itself. These codes could then be decrypted using a specially upgraded mobile phone. And if the composition sounds on vinyl? Alas, the new technology is still powerless here. Philips has a more constructive approach. 🙂
