About memory prices
A detailed study of the memory market showed that prices for SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory modules have increased in recent days. Since last week, prices for some items have risen up to 25%. Some manufacturers even temporarily stopped accepting orders. Here’s what we found out as a result of the “investigation”:
Micron and Samsung dumped in an attempt to get Hynix out of the game, however, further price reductions became pointless after Hynix secured government and creditors support.
The market crisis forced memory manufacturers to negotiate; thus, it became possible to control the volumes of supplies. Most manufacturers have reduced production by 2/3, and some have stopped production altogether.
Following the prices for SDRAM and DDR SDRAM, Rambus DRAM has slightly increased in price, however, further price growth (as well as demand) for this type of memory is not observed.
Although at the moment the industry is based on 128 MB SDRAM PC133, by the first quarter, due to the massive appearance on the market of DDR boards for P4, there may be an increase in demand and an even greater rise in prices for DDR SDRAM.
Many vendors believe the release of WinXP and the growing popularity of P4 will drive further price increases.
According to brokers, prices for some memory products could double in the next two weeks. According to some forecasts, by December, prices may rise by 50% – 70%.
