Home networking: the battle of standards
While demand for networking products is currently booming, it is unlikely that there will be room for so many standards: HomeRF, HomePlug, Home Phoneline Network Alliance (HPNA), and three 802.eleven. Nevertheless, companies continue to release products to the market that work in various standards in the hope that it will be this standard that will become the defining one.
The main market for all this abundance is seen, first of all, 12.4 million. American families who, according to experts, will need equipment for local networks next year.
All existing options are divided into 4 types: network over electric cables, wireless, telephone lines and cable Ethernet. On the one hand, all standards have their own advantages and provide comparable access speeds. On the other hand, many experts agree that, most likely, Ethernet solutions will be used for computers in one room, due to their cheapness and ease of cabling; for other solutions, wireless communication is likely to dominate (in which the main struggle goes between 802.11 and HomeRF).
It seems that for Russia the problem of wireless communication for the next few years is not so urgent when it comes to “home” networks: sitting on a dial-up connection to the Internet, many easily lay a twisted pair cable in parallel with a telephone cable, fortunately, this is the least expensive option.
