Winbond: 512 Mbit DDR Chips and New Friends

Winbond Electronics announced the start of production of new 512 Mbit DDR SDRAM memory chips using 0.13 micron process technology. The production of 512 Mbit chips using this process technology will undoubtedly allow Winbond to claim the leading position among Taiwanese DRAM companies next year.

Ironically, Toshiba, whose technologies are now used on new Winbond production lines, is now becoming Micron’s closest partner, and Winbond, as it became known, will enter into an alliance with German Infineon, which has not found a common language with Toshiba.

As it became known, immediately after the end of negotiations with Micron, Toshiba announced the end of the partnership program with Winbond, citing its withdrawal from the mass DRAM market. This was followed by a statement from Winbond itself that the next, 0.11 micron technological process will be developed and implemented with a new partner – Infineon. According to preliminary data, the equipment upgrade will cost Winbond about $ 150 million.
