DRAM makers: new factories are delayed

Leading DRAM manufacturers – Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, Hynix Semiconductor and Infineon – reported forced delays in the launch of their new 12-inch silicon wafer factories and postponed the start-up dates by at least six months to the end of the second half of 2021. The reason is clear – it is becoming increasingly difficult to make capital investments with such a low return on existing production.

Nevertheless, each company is trying to transfer at least the already operating lines to new standards of the technological process: the transition from 0.18 microns of the technological process to 0.15 microns allows an increase in the volume of manufactured products by at least 30%, which entails a decrease in the cost price.

Taiwanese DRAM makers, along with Elpida, a joint venture between NEC and Hitachi, are forced to pursue a similar strategy.

Plans of leading DRAM manufacturers Company Current technology New process technology Deadline Samsung 0.17 – 0.19 μm 0.15 μm (at least 90% of lines) End September Micron 0.18 μm 0.15 μm End of 2021 Hynix – 0.15 μm (50% of lines) End of 2021 Infineon0, 17 μm 0.14 μm – Elpida and Taiwanese companies – 0.15 μm or less End of 2021
