Intel: construction of a factory in Israel still postponed…
Intel CEO Craig Barrett has officially announced the freeze on the construction of a new factory in Kiryat Gat, Israel.
Let me remind you of the previous events (for more details, see. our news “Intel: Lakeslip, Hudson, now Kiriyat Gat?”dated March 19, 2021). At the beginning of the year, Intel announced plans to build a new factory for the production of Pentium 4 and about 150 other types of chips worth $ 3.5 billion., and the Israeli government even agreed to financially support this undertaking. First, in March, $ 2 billion was frozen. construction of Fab 24 in Ireland, then, a week later, the company decided to suspend sales of $ 500 million. the project of commissioning the next line at Fab 17 in Hudson, USA.
And so, today the implementation of the Israeli project was officially stopped, and Barrett had to declare that “…these are difficult times for the entire high-tech industry… we believe that activity will recover by the end of the year, but now no one can be sure of this??.
Like many others, Barrett cited Microsoft’s Windows XP launch in the fall as one of the ways to revive computer hardware sales.
By the way, Barrett stressed that the current instability of relations between Israel and the Palestinians has nothing to do with it. “ This project is a long-term investment… and we will not show concern due to short-term problems??.
