New 1394b standard: the first real chips

The first chips that allow the creation of 1394b devices on their basis were demonstrated at IDF by Texas Instruments.

The beauty of the new standard is not only that it will double the performance of the interface and bring it up to 800 Mb / s. It is very important that. that the 1394b standard allows you to increase the distance between two devices up to 100 m. The previous, now widespread version of the standard – IEEE 1394a, has a range limit of 4.5 m.

TI’s 1394b solution consists of a 1394 Physical Layer Interface (PHY) Chip and a 1394 Protocol Control Chip (Link Layer).

Link layer 1394b chip compliant with Open Host Controller Interface 1 standard.1 (OHCI) for PC and Macintosh compatibility with OHCI compliant systems. The three-port 1394b PHY chip is backward compatible with the “legacy” 1394a standard and is “bilingual”, supporting IEEE 1394a-2000 data strobing and 8B / 10B coding (for 1394b). Widespread adoption of 1394b devices on the market is expected in the second half of 2021.
