1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 from Motorola on the way

Motorola has announced the release of the next generation of its PowerPC processor – the 8500, or simply the G5, which will soon be in mass production.

According to sources close to Apple, the new processors will be released at 800 MHz, 1 GHz, 1.2 GHz, 1.4 GHz and 1.6 GHz. The first two are aimed at the embedded market, while the more powerful models are aimed at the desktop PC market and are likely to soon replace the G4 processors in Apple’s current systems.

The number of pipeline stages in the new 64-bit G5 processor has been brought to ten, as opposed to seven in the previous G7450. Despite the fact that the new processor is completely 64-bit, backward full-speed compatibility with 32-bit addressing is preserved. Thanks to SOI technology, Motorola says the 1.4GHz G5 will only dissipate 26W. The number of transistors in the new processor is known to be about 58 million., however, it is not yet completely certain whether copper with a 0.13 micron technological process will be used in the production of chips. Judging by the given figure of the dissipated power, it is likely to be.

The new chip will work with FSB 400 MHz. The G5 chipset will support up to 16GB DDR SDRAM; the south bridge of the chipset will support USB 2.0 and bluetooth. Due to the fact that Apple actively supports the promotion of AMD HyperTransport technology, there is an assumption that it will also appear in the new chipset.

It is not yet known exactly when the mass production of the G5 processors will begin, but there is an assumption that this will happen at the very beginning of the first quarter of 2021, so it is quite possible that at the April Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Apple will be able to present the next generation systems. By the way, by the same time it is planned to release a 64-bit version of Mac OS X 10.2 (Cheetah).

Anyway, we will definitely hear additional details about the new processors from Motorola after October 15, during the Microprocessor Forum. Source: Ace?s Hardware
