Mobile RAM by Elpida

Memory manufacturers clearly did not agree on a common standard for DRAM for mobile devices: almost each of them presented its own standard and interface. And some technologies are really worthwhile – JEDEC cannot decide on a standard in any way.

Today in the lens of Elpida, which announced the availability of its new 128 Mbit and 64 Mbit Mobile RAM.

Newer chips run at 1.8V, compared to older 64Mbps which run at 2.5V. The new Mobile RAM chips fully meet the main JEDEC specifications for low-voltage DRAM. Mobile RAM has a “deep sleep” (DPD) mode, the operating current is 80 and 40 mA for 128 and 64 Mbit chips, respectively, the self-recovery current is 350 and 250 μA, which is not bad at all.

In addition, Mobile RAM can operate over an impressive -25 to 85 C temperature range thanks to a temperature compensated self-healing circuit. New chips made by 0.15 micron process in 54-pin FBGA package. There are 100 and 133 MHz versions of the chips, their CAS is 3, while 133 MHz chips operate at 2.5 V.

Another competitive product. The mobile DRAM market is very promising indeed. In the near future, there will be more that competition…
