New SDRAM technology from Hitachi
Hitachi Announces New Technology That Can Reduce Memory Chip Power Consumption By 40% While Reducing Data Access Time By 49%. The technology, called the “SDRAM Mode Control Scheme”, essentially allows the chip-level amplifiers to act as cache memory, giving the CPU access to data without being tied to a common clock speed. According to Hitachi representatives, such a scheme, being built into microprocessors, will significantly increase performance and reduce power consumption.
The new level amplifier circuit block, made using new technology, uses an area of about 0.28 sq. mm, Hitachi said at the 2021 Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED) conference in Huntington, Calif. In a conventional SDRAM memory chip, access to the data array is divided into three stages. Initially, the data is transferred from the memory cells to the level amplifier. Data is now available for external readout from the output of the level amplifier. The last step is to clear the contents of the level amplifier. Hitachi came to the conclusion that if the data is not deleted, but stored in the level amplifier, then the circuit can function in cache mode, giving the processor access to the data without performing a shared access cycle.
Hitachi’s memory performance software benchmarks using the new circuit have proven that power consumption can be reduced by 40% and performance can be increased by 49%. Hitachi does not say exactly where it intends to use this technology.
