Matsushita announced real results in the development of a high-power SHG laser in the blue region of the spectrum – such as will be used in the next generation of optical drives. The abbreviation SHG stands for simply: Second Harmonic Generation, that is, the second, even harmonic, and the principle of operation of such a laser is even simpler: as a result of the operation of an infrared laser with a wavelength of, say, 850 nm, together with the use of the SHG effect, we get two lengths at once : 425 nm and 850 nm.
