NEC announces decision to transfer two Japanese telecom factories to an as-yet-unselected EMS supplier.
The company is currently in talks with several EMS companies to contract out its own production of NEC Miyagi and NEC Yamanashi optical systems to another manufacturer. The company plans to resolve this issue by the end of the year.
NEC has the most aggressive outsourcing policy of all Japanese OEMs, choosing it as a business model. For example, last month the company entered into a lease agreement to transfer a server factory in Ibaraki to the Californian EMS provider Milpitas, and before that transferred its production facilities to Brazilian and Canadian companies.
The purpose of such actions, according to company representatives, is to increase the competitiveness of manufactured products and production flexibility, reduce the lead time for new orders to better control fluctuations in market demand.
As for the reasons why NEC has chosen this development model, they are the decline in sales and profitability due to the ongoing economic downturn.
