Dell: Back to the Future

Dell decided to take a rather interesting move – to present a “strict” model of a cheap PC, in which the user cannot change or choose the components of his future computer. Dell decided to implement such an “experiment” (as the company itself calls it) and recently introduced the Dell SmartStep computer with 1 GHz Celeron, 128 MB of memory, 20 GB hard drive and 15 “monitor for $ 599.

The fact is that now the market has long been accustomed to the concept of a configurable PC and a certain step back is a fresh solution for the western PC market. Obviously, the PC maker is making big savings by selling pre-configured and customized systems. Therefore, the price can be dropped even lower. Dell, of course, is not the first in such an endeavor. Significant is the attention of the leading company to such a concept.

The company sees small and medium-sized businesses and the Internet market as the main potential markets for the new PC. In the West, and especially in the States, people have already become accustomed to the fact that anything can be bought on the Internet and such an inexpensive computer, for the purchase of which you do not need to choose for a long time and it can really be a success.

Dell spokesman declined to answer questions regarding any other preconfigured models or SmartStep laptop.

And one more thing: for now, SmartStep will only be promoted in the States and, perhaps, in Europe. You yourself understand that our, basically, DIY-market does not need such solutions.
