Toshiba and Siemens: 3G apart

Toshiba announced the end of the partnership program with Siemens, according to which both companies have been working on the release of 3G phones since November 2000. The main reason, indicated by Toshiba, lies in the delays in the introduction of European 3G networks and, accordingly, in the absence of prospects for their maintenance.

Despite the fact that many European operators are now announcing that 3G networks will appear by the end of 2021, Toshiba still refused to share the R&D burden with Siemens.

Recall: before that, the companies were developing the implementation of W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology for the European and Asian markets, for the gradual migration of subscribers from GSM to 3G UMTS phones. Now W-CDMA is used only by the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo, while European operators are still more interested in the introduction of GPRS.
