The US National Science Foundation (NSF) ordered the construction of the world’s most powerful supercomputer on 64-bit Intel Itanium processors.

The supercomputer, dubbed “TeraGrid”, will combine more than 3,300 Itanium processors into a cluster system located in four cities in the United States: the University of Illinois, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, and the Argonne National Laboratory, a suburb of Chicago. and at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena).

In addition to the current Itanium processors, TeraGrid will also feature 64-bit “McKinley” processors slated for release in 2021.

The total computing power of TeraGrid will be more than 13.6 teraflops (13.6 trillion. operations per second), the total amount of stored data is more than 450 TB.

Part of the $ 53 million allocated by NSF. will go to the purchase of ready-made components and subsystems from IBM running Linux and interconnected by the Qwest optical network.
