Comdex Fall2021: Thoroughbred photos and AMD plans clarification

At the Las Vegas show, AMD has finally decided to demonstrate the next generation of Athlon XP processors with the Thoroughbred core, which will be produced with 0.13 micron process technology.

And this is how the “new” Thoroughbred and the current Palomino look side by side:

However, Thoroughbred, of course, should have appeared in samples around this time: only a few months / weeks were left before the start of mass shipments of this processor.

The main difference between the new core, apart from the transition to a new technical process, is perhaps in the size of the crystal: Thoroughbred has an area of 80 sq. mm, which is more than a third less than 129 sq. mm for the current Athlon XP, as well as 116 sq. mm for the expected also after the New Year Intel Northwood (by the way, and here it is):

However, do not forget about 512 KB L2 cache in Northwood and half as small in the Athlon XP line. The tests will show what will be decisive in the competition between the two competing companies, although it can already be assumed that if AMD manages to bring the 0.13-micron technical process “to mind” and ensure the minimum scrap yield, it can already be assumed that the new Thoroughbred, which will fit on the plate more, will be, respectively, and cheaper.

In conclusion – AMD roadmap of “traditional look”.

It should be noted that the company, despite the detailed plans for the release of processors, including PR-marking, for a year and a half ahead of last week, this schedule expressed itself somewhat more restrained. For example, the development of future 32-bit Duron processors (Appaloosa core) from the second half of 2021 has been marked as “in line with market demands”. The same is for the Athlon XP line (Barton), but from the beginning of 2021.
