RDF 2021: Yellowstone – New Data Transfer Technology From Rambus
Today it was reported that at the inception of the Rambus Developer Forum (RDF) 2021, held in conjunction with Elpida, Intel, Samsung and Toshiba, Rambus unveiled the details of the new Yellowstone signal technology for the next generation of its memory products.
Yellowstone, or Yellowstone Octal Data Rate (ODR), as announced, will transfer up to eight data bits (!) per clock cycle, which is achieved by differential parallelization of the signal transmission at a frequency of 3.2 GHz. Yellowstone technology is based on real differential (the previous RSL protocol was pseudo-differential) signaling protocol DRSL (Differential Rambus Signaling Levels), 200 mVp-p (1.2 V – logic 0, 1.0 V – logic 1), including on-chip termination and bi-directional signaling.
Octal Data Rate technology is based on multiplying the external 400 MHz system clock signal by 4 times inside the chip and increases the clock frequency of the memory chip from 400 MHz to 1.6 GHz. Taking into account the technology of data transmission on both edges of the sync signal, we are already talking about 3.2 GHz. PLL stabilizes timing and keeps random spikes below 30 ps.
As expected, chips using Yellowstone technology, similar to the current low-voltage microcircuits, will be executed in PBGA packages, four-layer PCB layout will be used for modules. So far, Rambus has not revealed how the underlying technology will be implemented in actual chips, however, if Rambus’s current 16-bit memory channels are expanded with Yellowstone technology, each chip can deliver 6.4 GB / s performance.
Who needs this kind of performance now? As you know, the Intel Pentium 4 bus is limited by the bandwidth of 4.2 Gb / s. Representatives of the company, however, believe that by 2021 there will be many applications that need a bus bandwidth of 7-8 Gb / s – for example, the same Sony Playstation III, as well as all kinds of communication devices.
