JEDEC DDR333: PC2700 prototype released
It seems that today another step has been taken towards new generations of memory: SMART Modular, a division of Solectron, announced the release of prototypes of 184-pin DDR SDRAM PC2700 DIMM memory modules based on new DDR333 chips in an FBGA package. Modules are tested for full compliance with the DDR333 standard adopted by JEDEC in May this year.
Of course, we have already seen more than once announcements of new PC2400 and PC2700 modules in limited quantities. However, this is not quite what can rightfully be attributed to the JEDEC DDR333 standard: the fact is that they were all ordinary “overclocked” PC2100 modules. The PC2700 modules presented today from SMART Modular are assembled on chips packed in a FBGA (fine-pitch ball grid array) package, which also gives a lot of advantages over current chips in TSOP packaging.
Taiwanese Nanya also took part in the development and implementation of prototypes of modules of the new standard, hoping to be one of the first to start mass production of DDR333 chips based on the prototypes presented.
