Pioneer and JVC leave the mobile market
Renowned Japanese manufacturer of audio and video home appliances, Pioneer, has announced that it will no longer release mobile products, just like its rival JVC.
The reason for this decision, according to Tokyo’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun, was the very weak sales of mobile phones in the local Japanese market, which can rightfully be called the most competitive. In line with the decision, Pioneer announced that it will not develop new generation phones for 3G networks. JVC has a different situation. The company, 52.4% owned by Matsushita Electric, has refused to release some models of PHS-phones (personal handyphone system). The JVC way is a little different. The company intends to re-equip its production for the production of other types of mobile devices – PDA, audio / video consoles with built-in wireless functions, etc.
So, now there are two cell phone manufacturers in the domestic Japanese market – NEC and Matsushita Communication. For reference: Pioneer, which started production of mobile handsets in 1994, currently only produced one model for the Japanese operator J-Phone. So the losses for it are not great, especially since J-Phone still has such suppliers as Sanyo Electric, NEC and Toshiba. JVC has released seven models of PHS phones since it entered the mobile market in 1995, but not a single new product has come from it since 1999. So the losses are minimal here too.
