Intel: 533 MHz FSB – very soon

Intel intends to announce 533 MHz bus for Pentium 4 processors in the very near future. Of course, such a bus would only make sense when combined with performance memory, which is why, according to various sources, 533 MHz FSB will be combined with 1.06 GHz Direct RDRAM, which Rambus is expected to officially unveil at its 22 – October 23rd in San Jose, California.

Whatever they say about the price advantages of i845 in combination with SDRAM and even the current DDR266, there are markets for which performance is more important than price, and for them the next logical step in increasing performance is standardizing a faster system bus.

Intel representatives shy away from discussing everything related to 533 MHz FSB so far. It would be tempting to hear the announcement of the new bus on October 15 at the Microprocessor Forum, however, it is unlikely that Rambus will be happy with this announcement before the presentation of its 1.06 GHz RDRAM. Most likely, both announcements will be synchronized somehow.
