DRAM: problems of Asian manufacturers

Now are not the best times for the DRAM market: overproduction has been observed for several months now, and so far there is no end in sight. Manufacturers, in order not to lose profitability at all, in such a situation are trying to reorient themselves to more profitable products.

Winbond, for example, is trying to find niche products and reorient its production. This year, the company reduced its DRAM share of its products to 30% -40% from 55% last year. The company plans to enter new “non-PC” markets where you can sell your products at a profit, and not almost 3 times lower than the cost price.

Japanese Fujitsu, after another unsuccessful quarter and the layoff of 4.5 thousand. employees, plans to move into software development and services, areas that remain profitable.

Powerchip, with its fairly advanced factories, wants to engage in contract manufacturing of chips and move away from DRAM a little. This is a more profitable business. Example? The infamous TSMC recently surprised analysts with its results for the 3rd quarter – the company announced insignificant, but still earnings.

As for Toshiba, it will most likely simply sell its division to German Infineon and this will all end.

And now some sad statistics – Mosel Vitelic shares fell 78% over the year, Winbond – 70%, Nanya – 77%. Apparently, we should expect some new perturbations among DRAM manufacturers: purchases, sales, mergers, etc.d. After all, even according to the most optimistic forecasts, after September 11, the DRAM market should be cleared only by the middle of next year.
