Moreover: the current 0.18 micron Foster will simply be replaced by a new generation of server chips with the Prestonia core, which will be manufactured using a 0.13 micron process technology. Naturally, this will be a completely different technological level: according to preliminary data from the roadmap, the processor will have 512 KB of cache on the chip, and clock speeds will presumably start at 2.2 GHz. Intel is preparing a new Plumas chipset for this processor, the release of which is scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. By the way, as it became known, some OEMs close to Intel already have prototypes of systems on Prestonia. Accordingly, Intel has now moved Prestonia release from the end to the very beginning of the first quarter of 2021.

Speaking about the reasons for the cancellation of the release of 0.18 micron Xeon processors, the company representative emphasized two key points: the proximity in parameters of the Xeon and Prestonia processors, as well as a more successful and faster than expected transition to production with the 0.13 micron process technology. Like, what’s the point of fencing a 0.18 micron “vegetable garden” when more modern models will be released very soon? However, I suspect that not everything is so simple with the 0.18 micron process technology itself: it is very likely that no technological tricks could help Intel engineers set up mass production of such complex processors with such (already outdated?) technical process.
