FreeBSD is back in parenting hands

It became known that the FreeBSD OS, a popular, free distribution version of the Unix OS, has returned to the hands of one of the developers who were at the origins of the creation of this OS. For a long time, the FreeBSD brand was owned by Wind River Systems, which on Monday announced the termination of all its free software projects.

Wind River transferred its FreeBSD team to the free software developer FreeBSD Mall, led by Bob Bruce, the man who made the first commercial release of FreeBSD in 1993. Bob Bruce is also the founder of Walnut Creek CDROM, which changed its name to FreeBSD Mall this month.

According to the terms of the agreement, FreeBSD Mall takes full responsibility for the technical support of users who received the OS from Wind River, in addition, it takes responsibility for the further development and distribution of the operating system.

Earlier, the company announced its desire to sell a commercial version of the OS in the United States through suppliers such as BestBuy, CompUSA and Amazon with plans to further enter the European and Asian markets.

A little historical background: FreeBSD is a free BSD-Unix version based on version 4.4BSD-Lite (latest versions, earlier based on 4.4BSD-Net2) developed by the University of California at Berkeley. The goal of the project is to provide users with software that can be used to solve any problems without any restrictions.

The operating system is developed by a large number of enthusiasts, at the same time (unlike Linux), releases are released by a strictly defined team. Some of the source code of the software is distributed under the GPL, but preference is given to products distributed under the BSD copyright, which is less cruel in terms of commercial use.

The operating system has become famous for its reliability, as evidenced by its use to support the sites of Microsoft, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. This operating system is preferred by many ISPs for organizing their services, organizations and individuals.
