AMD plus Micron: another set…

Following the example of Intel, which sells its new processors complete with RDRAM memory, AMD intends, in alliance with Micron Technology, to start selling DDR chipsets, completing them with DDR SDRAM modules. Taiwanese motherboard makers who have already heard of the upcoming deal are reporting that the kits may well start in the third quarter.Production of motherboards based on DDR AMD 761 and VIA KT266 chipsets by Taiwanese leaders – Gigabyte, Asustek and MSI – has already begun, the integrated SiS735 chipset will go into mass production this month. Distributors prefer motherboards based on AMD 761, if only because of their lower price (compared to VIA’s chipset); retailers with previous experience selling new boards say AMD 761 boards outperform VIA KT266.According to sources, the AMD 761 chipset, currently shipping for just over $ 30, will ship with 128MB DDR modules ($ 31- $ 35) for under $ 60; however, the same sources report that the bundle will include the most inexpensive modules – PC1600 DDR. There is an obvious intention to “kill two birds with one stone”: to clear warehouses from memory stocks and continue active promotion of DDR as an alternative to RDRAM.In March, if you remember, something similar was arranged by VIA, completing its DDR chipsets with memory from Micron, and then from Nanya Technologies. Although the demand for these products was generally low, some positive results in the promotion of DDR have been achieved. If AMD nevertheless starts promoting its DDR kits in the second half of the year, which are quite comparable in price to PC133 kits, an increase in interest in DDR is not excluded. Why not?Source: The DigiTimes
