VIA: up to a million boards per month?
As you know, VIA recently announced its intention to become a motherboard supplier (of course, it is not the manufacturer, but the marking changes to the VIA brand) and announced a large number of motherboards based on P4X266. VIA is now naturally positioning itself against Intel, but it could become a competitor to major Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers that are not its OEM partners. VIA has set itself a target of 1 million boards sold per month by mid-2021, which could bring it on par with ASUS, ECS, MSI and Gigabyte. While this figure sounds rather dubious, but who knows how everything will turn out by the middle of next year.
So far, the contingent of VIA’s partners remains unknown, but one can guess so – those who refused to release motherboards based on new chipsets from SiS are clearly on good terms with VIA. In the future, VIA wants, among other things, to develop the design of the motherboards themselves, which will allow it to abstract a little from its OEM partners and create its own distribution network. So far, according to information from Taiwanese sources, the company has not provided its partners with a single finished product design.
So far, analysts do not see any compelling reason under VIA’s forecasts for the shipment of a million boards. Manufacturing and design of motherboards is also not an easy task, requiring some experience. But anything can happen…
