Joint venture between Sanyo and Kodak

Sanyo and Kodak have reportedly agreed to form a joint venture to produce next-generation ultra-thin displays. The companies invested about $ 400 million in the new venture.

It is based on OEL (organic electroluminescent) display technology, which should become another competitive technology in the display market for cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras and anything else that has power consumption and size limitations.

Sanyo is already piloting 2.4 “OEL displays and has been partnering with Kodak for a long time. According to the plan, mass production should begin in February next year. Companies plan to earn up to 70 billion on active matrix OEL displays. yen ($ 650 million.) by 2021. Sanyo will own 66% of the company, and Kodak will own the rest.

There are many contenders for this market. Sanyo and Kodak will compete: Toshiba, a joint venture between NEC and Samsung, and Pioneer (backed by TDK and Sharp). In a year, this market will be quite crowded.

It seems that OEL in the coming years will find its niche in small battery-powered devices, but it is too early to count on a share in large displays (12 “and more). Although Samsung, I remember, announced that they had developed a 14 “OEL display.
