Elitegroup 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 Desktop Laptops

Elitegroup, better known as the motherboard manufacturer, has announced its readiness to launch the production of notebooks based on the Pentium 4, which they believe will be the best on the market.

The highlight of the idea is that this laptop has no batteries or accumulators. In addition, mobile Pentium 4s are not expected until the second quarter of this year. Apparently, therefore, the company calls its computer Desknote (desktop notebook), and not notebook (notebook). It is a kind of hybrid between a powerful desktop PC and a small laptop.

Some characteristics of the device:

  • 15 – 20 GB hard drive and CD / DVD drive
  • Regular (not mobile) Pentium 4 with clock speeds up to 2.2 GHz
  • Up to 1 GB DDR266 / DDR333 memory in 184-pin TSOP DIMMs typically found in desktop PCs
  • 15 inch TFT-LCD screen
  • 4 USB ports, IEEE 1394 port
  • LAN port

The weight of the device will be slightly less than 3 kg, but the price will be pleasantly low: about $ 1200.

According to Elitegroup, the company made the decision to abandon batteries after it focused on the market for devices replacing traditional PCs. Although, at the request of the buyer, Desknote can be equipped with an external battery connected through a special connector.

Another Taiwanese company, Mitac Computer, announced this week a P4 laptop with a battery. This laptop uses dual fans and an additional heatsink to effectively cool the processor. There are rumors in the market that a number of Taiwanese companies, including Asustek, will also release P4 laptops based on desktop processors. Of all the companies engaged in such delights, only Elitegroup refused to equip its device with a battery.

Even regular laptops are 95% of the time powered, according to company executives. Also, is it worth releasing devices whose competitiveness will plummet after Intel’s mobile P4 release expected in March or April?? So Elitegroup immediately set their sights on the market for non-standard devices replacing conventional PCs. (Who knows, maybe someday a new word will appear in the Russian language – desknote?)

In the meantime, the company plans to sell its Desknote under its own brand name, although it will not abandon “interesting OEM offers”

As it became known, Elitegroup also plans to release Desknote based on Athlon XP and Duron processors.Source: EE Times
