US Department of Defense has updated the GPS standard

Information appeared on the website of the US Department of Defense that a decision has been made and the development of specifications for an updated standard for the Global Positioning System (GPS).

The new ICD-GPS-200 standard is intended to replace the previous one, adopted back in 1995, and, to some extent, obsolete. The updated GPS, in particular, declares that the positioning accuracy in the horizontal plane of the “civil” GPS has now been improved to 36 meters, instead of the 100 meters of the previous standard. In addition, the new “civil” GPS will now include correction codes for ionospheric signal distortions and other measures to improve positioning accuracy.

The launch of satellites to support the new standard is expected to take place in 2021 – 2021, with the final launch of the updated GPS slated for 2021.
